This day has begun in a rather unexpected manner. I suppose the writing
was on the wall for a while, but it took me by surprise.
Some weeks ago I did my standard apt-get upgrade and was presented with
Evolution 2 for the first time. Up to that point I'd been running 1.4.6
for quite some time with few issues. The installation went smoothly, but
the first launch failed when the mail import failed. I lodged a bug
report, went back to Evolution 1.4.6 and found out that other things on
my machine, Multi-Sync for one, were broken.
It was at this point that I finally decided to migrate 2.1Gb of email
into IMAP and with the assistance of #debian, some bash scripts and some
manual tweaking, my mail now lives on an IMAP server.
I then installed Thunderbird in an attempt to get away from the
bloatware that is Evolution.
Thunderbird served me pretty well until today.
Minor annoyances, such as incorrect filtering, mail notification and
virtual folder bugs pale to insignificance when I look at some of the
email that Thunderbird has sent out on my behalf. Messages attached and
forwarded have turned out to be either not included, butchered, BASE64
encoded without headers and any number of other monstrosities.
To top it off I sent out two plain text messages, Fixed-Width,
pre-format, only to see them completely mangled in my out-box - they
contained an ASCII-art reminder to a sys-admin to upgrade a database
server as soon as possible, but thanks to the joys of Thunderbird, the
message failed to arrive.
Other "features" include the inability to actually forward messages in
any way that spamcop can understand, each attempt resulting in a spamcop
error.
I am a heavy email user, I started off with Pegasus Mail because my
employer required it, back in 1992. I ended up writing my own HyperCard
stack to deal with message tracking. I then migrated to Eudora where I
happily stayed for the next eight years, version 1.4.3 was rock solid,
shame about the later versions. When I migrated to Linux, I went with
Evolution, which over time has become slower and slower, and less and
less stable.
I am in desperate search for a replacement email client.
Any suggestions - and don't come to me with anything that doesn't include:
* IMAP connectivity
* Multiple Signatures
* Multiple Accounts
* Filters
* Spell Checking
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that someone in our community also
receives some 100 emails or so a day and that they have found a solution
that doesn't involve pulling out hair.
Crossed fingers,
