Sorry to answer only a part of your post, but I'm experimenting with kmail, 
instead of evolution and I can shed some light - not much, though...

RHEL 3 is Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 - think old but stable (and supported), 
sort of like Debian stable, except with paid support.

I think it has the cutting edge version of KDE 1.2 there ;-)
