if you just want to copy a VHS to DVD, without the DVD menus, its
relatively easy. Hook a VCR to your s-video input of a standard TV card,
encode to a dvd-compatible mpeg format with 'mencoder', then run
a couple of simple 'dvdauthor' command to build the VOB files etc,
and burn it.
The 'mencoder' command needs lots of options, but you can find
examples on the web and script it.
