smb doesnt tunnel well at the port level which ssh does - its possible,
but there are numerous issues. The alternative is full network
connectivity with CISCOvpn, OpenVPN, CIPE or similar and then bridge to
the internal network, but its already been stated the client user has
little IT skill so such solutions are likely to be both difficult to
implement transparently and administratively expensive.
This is where WebDAV and network filesystems shine: they move the
administrative overhead to where the skills are available (server end)
and policies can be enforced and not be exposed to subversion or the
network exposed to virii/worms and the like.
