Thank you to Craig and Richard - the cd volume can indeed be adjusted
separately on the mixer, but I find alsamixer confusing!
It looks as though I've still some need for help. Trying to configure
the system using KDE's configuration window produces the following error
message:
Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device: default can't be opened for playback (Device or resource busy)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.
What does this signify?
