I'd go for DDR2 and socket AM2.  2GB if you can afford it, 1GB is
generally enough at the moment.

Agreed.  The kid will probably love the experience of helping build one,
it'll be somewhat educational, and the first couple of times you spec
out and build a system, it's even fun.
