And I would of thought this :

Destination         Gateway         Genmask         Flags Metric Ref    
Use Iface
192.168.1.2         0.0.0.0         255.255.255.255 UH    0      
0        0 ppp0

should be :

Destination     Gateway         Genmask         Flags Metric Ref    Use 
Iface
192.168.1.2     192.168.1.249         255.255.255.255 UH    0      
0        0 ppp0

( route add 192.168.1.2 gw 192.168.1.249 )

The very least you should be able to ping the other side ( 192.168.1.249 )
