yes and no - you get good reliability for the zones you are responsible
for (maybe!), but you are still at the mercy of upstream queries.

Yes I do run my own dns (caching bind + internal addresses) on my
gateway, but iinet is set as forwarder to iinets DNS which is the way a
"polite" ISP client should normally run.

The problem is DNS is hierarchal (unless you specifically query near the
top of the tree), so if the chain breaks somewhere, you can get odd
symptoms.

It also seems that many DNS servers wont allow queries from outside
their local network.  Murdoch Uni seems to allow queries from iinet
clients which is what I used at the time.
