Here's another idea to chuck in the mix:
The majority of the files being flung around are going to be word and excel, 
with the occasional powerpoint and the more occasional publisher file....... 
For the majority of machines, just OOo, and one PC in the room with Office 
for the formats that won't read..... (could also use it across the network 
via a virtual pc program)
