[plug] nvidia drivers slow on etch

Hi all
Have installed the nvidia drivers on debian etch but they are as slow as
has anyone else experenced this.I am using xorg and after much reading
got the nvidia splash screen but in glxgears the gears hardly turn infact it 
is
that slow it does not even register a frame rate. Checking glxinfo direct 
rendering
=yes
All ideas welcome
