Do I have the solution for you!

If you must use nautilus, you can give this as a command line argument to
stop it loading the desktop in the background:
$ nautilus --no-desktop
(add --no-desktop to the launcing command).

Otherwise, Thunar is a very good file manager made for the new xfce 4.4 that
will be released soon. It looks almost exactly the same as nautilus, but is
smaller and faster. http://thunar.xfce.org/

Also, rox-filer is very good, but a bit different from nautilus.
