We had quite a few problems with audible noise on the line back a few
years ago, so I imagine that is the problem. I'm also quite a way from
the exchange so I'm sure thats not helping either.
I certainly don't recommend the DLink DSL300G+, anyway. Aside from the
dropout problem, it crashes instantly at the slightest hint of dark
clouds or thunder. I'm guessing its a combination of a cheap powerpack
and very little filtering circuitry in the modem itself.

Also the new modems should support ADSL2, which I've gathered offers
better reliability over longer distances. Correct me if I'm wrong.
I'll have to have a look at the NetComm (thanks Jason), which sounds
pretty good for $130.
