I do the same thing at home - also works really great for LAN
parties... (Plus PHP magic for a intranet list of connected computers,
with their names).
Debian stable's bind9 and dhcpd3 can be very easily configured to make
this all work.
It's also interesting to note that my internal machines get
<machinename>.lan... seems to be a popular suffix for internal nets...
