[plug] mepis, compiler erros

more mepis troubles...... :( pretty much anything i try to compile fails 
with errors, even switching between gcc 4.0 and 3.4 (from memory, the two 
installed anyway). i tried upgrading gcc from debian archive, same deal. 
anyone else had this prob? it's even stumbling on really basic stuff like 
lame or mp3blaster. i really like mepis, but i'm having serious hassles! 
should i compile a new kernel or something?
