It could either be your coreutils or check /etc/make.profile symlink to 
make sure you're using the latest profile for your system/arch. A quick 
search of forums.gentoo.org turned up a few hits so you may already have 
found someone has answered your question. I find google doesn't cache 
forums.gentoo.org very well... for some reason.
