He is just getting a new HDD, not a whole laptop.
If the replacement disk is bigger, you can resize the partition after 
restoring it.
  Tar will break the boot manager, at least.
  I don't think it matters if the drive geometry is different these 
days, does it?

BTW, as of the current version, the Ubuntu install CD is also a live 
boot CD, like knoppix, and would do the job.
