Thanks, Bill.

I'll sit down with it again tomorrow :-(   I even did the "root (hd3,0)" 
again but without effect.    In fact though, since I can "cat" several 
files, it would seem that the root partition (hd3 in this case) is being 
correctly identified.

Will also re-visit the menu.lst file to see if it remains correct.   I 
noted it wanted to use the root=UUID= ident syntax for the hdd but I 
changed that to root=/dev/sdd1 without benefit.   Will also have a look at 
/etc/fstab
