I had huge problems with the onboard SATA on a Gigabyte board
recently, though it was a NForce5 chipset which I believe was the
issue. Switching to an NForce4 board fixed the problem, though then
the networking stopped working.

I'd steer clear of Linux on NForce in general based on that
experience. I didn't however see any reason to think that the Gigabyte
board itself was the issue.

PCI SATA cards are relatively cheap these days, so you can always try
one of them as a fallback if the onboard doesn't work.

I probably wouldn't try using the onboard RAID functionality - it's
going to be cheap and nasty, so you're much more likely to get good
results using the SATA devices and Linux software RAID.
