[plug] ./configure

./configure is actually a generated file. Most tarballs are supplied
minimally configured which means the first stages have been done for
you. Every now and again you get a package that needs to be generated
from scratch. You can wipe out configure with a distclean argument
which resets everything - sometimes needed in 'difficult' cases.

Look up the gnu autoconf/automake tools for the details.

Lastly, not every build system uses the gnu build tools - check the
readme and install files if they exist for what is needed.
