If they're using M$ servers for their VPN, your solution lies in "pptp" and
it's associated GUI if you like <http://pptpclient.sourceforge.net/>. I've
used this to get to M$ VPN servers with no trouble at all; especially since
newer kernels include by default the authentication module needed (a bit
like compression modules already being there too..).

This would be equivalent to using the "standard" dial up VPN mechanism in
Window$ clients, which is probably what they got your '98 box doing.
