Sorry - I hadn't realised it was for a USB device. Now I understand what 
you want - like using the label command in DOS, to put a label on a 
floppy disk (remember those?).

I did a google search using the strings "howto", "label", "usb drive", 
and "linux", got about 22,000 results, and one result is at 
http://ubuntu.wordpress.com/2006/03/01/editing-fat32-partition-labels-using-mtools/

I hope that that is a bit more useful.

I note that you did not state your distribution.

I assume that the above will work for whatever distribution you are 
using.
