Sorry can't help you with the cable, but in regards to SMS alerts, do 
you require the phone just because the alerts can't traverse the 
internet when they need to be dispatched ?

If not, have a look at this mob : http://www.clickatell.com

They have a nice API which makes it very simple to send SMS alerts, we 
use them for an industrial alarming product we have.
