I'd tend to agree with your analysis; either a bad sign or some kind
of crossed wire (?). It may help to take the sucker apart, and clean
it out though. The way I've done this in the past is to remove all the
electrical bits and wash the plastic and rubber parts in a laundry tub
with washing powder. Does wonders, then dry it out thoroughly and
piece it all back together.
What is the keyboard type? AT?
