Replying to myself now that panick has died down, it looks like a dead hard
drive.

# vgdisplay
  Couldn't find device with uuid 'Z1tlHa-60OU-iymQ-nQJu-z9OD-abno-PkxUC5'.

Which /etc/lvm/archive/lvm_vol_grp_1_00001.vg says is /dev/sdb

I mistakenly thought that it was cryptsetups fault.
