Actually, I'd be interested in following this thread - if you could
move it to off-topic at plug.org.au instead I would appreciate it.

One thing that might be worth looking into is your airconditioning
systems (if you have them) at the remote sites - enterprise models may
be able to give you a serial data output, and you could pull
temperature from that.

Otherwise something like this:

useful.
