The ISP have advised me that they cannot replicate the problem.

I have done it with various FTP clients, on both Debian 4.0 and Ubuntu 
8.04, and, here, it comes down to Extended Passive Mode working, and, 
Passive Mode not working.

I have posted a message on the gftp mailing list, asking what prospect 
exists of gftp being upgraded/modified, to incorporate Extended Passive 
Mode (defined in RFC2428 in September 1998), as the laste specified (on 
the gftp web site) stable version of gftp, is dated April 2005. The gftp
developer is on that mailing list.

The ISP "plan" for Internet access, is a "home" one that I have just 
signed up for, with a 2 year contract. The download speeds are pretty 
good (ADSL2, with some downloads reaching 300+ Kb/s); up to about 
10Mb/minute. But, the FTP access is a bit problematic...
