You may not have to even do this. If the problem is that X is
overdriving your monitor, switch to a virtual console by pressing
Ctrl-Alt-F1 (Ctrl-Windows key-F1 on some keyboards) a few times. This
will let you login on the console, edit your file and reboot to fire
up X again.
