[plug] port 22 opens and closes randomly?

Hi Pluggers,

I dont have any firewall running and I dont see anything in kern.log or
dmesg (of course, I could be staring at something and not recognize its
importance).

Here is what I have done.

The server is called ls-gl7d6 and a squeezebox (streaming media palyer)
get its music steamed from ls-gl7d6.

Both get their IP by dhcp. ls-gl7d6 gets 192.168.1.101 and the
squeezebox gets 192.168.1.102. ls-gl7d6 sometimes boots into emergency
mode (EM) -- it then changes its name and seems to get IP 192.168.1.102
ie this is ls-gl7d6 in EM mode

sudo nmap -p 15-25 192.168.1.102
Starting Nmap 4.20 ( http://insecure.org ) at 2008-03-16 22:38 EST
Interesting ports on 192.168.1.102:
PORT STATE SERVICE
23/tcp open telnet
MAC Address: 00:16:01:41:61:9B (Buffalo)
Nmap finished: 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 6.248 seconds

and then this is the squeezebox

sudo nmap -p 15-25 192.168.1.101
Starting Nmap 4.20 ( http://insecure.org ) at 2008-03-16 22:37 EST
Interesting ports on ls-gl7d6 (192.168.1.101):
all closed
MAC Address: 00:04:20:12:39:94 (Slim Devices)
Nmap finished: 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 0.211 seconds

note the squeezebox is now reporting the wrong name, and is now on
192.168.1.101

Could I have some sort of conflict here? Is such a conflict possible?

I havnet investigated it fully. I have just given the squeezebox a
static IP address (192.168.1.110) and rebooted everything about 10
times. ls-gl7d6 still comes up in EM mode (2 out of 10) but the strange
opening and closing ports has not recurred.

However as this is intermittant -- I dont really know if it is fixed.
Later I will move the squeezebox back to dhcp and see if the problem
returns

Bye
Rob
