I had a similar problem with an Epson multifunction back with
Ubuntu Gutsy. I found doing a 
 
chmod 700 /usr/lib/cups/backend/hal  

fixed the problem. 

However that file is set at 755 on my installation of Jaunty and
I don't see why making it executable by root only would work.
