Hi Dave & Nigel,

The chmod of Nigel if done to

chmod 700 /usr/lib/cups/backend/hal

as well as

chmod 700 /usr/lib/cups/backend/usb

should solve the problem.

In my opinion it might be a clash between ubuntu and debian. The reasoning
is that I might have a root on debian but not on ubuntu and so the
permissions of hal get messed up.

Since currently I'm in the position that I can afford the hardware that
only works with ubuntu without having to go jump through all the hoops
(mixing stable/testing/unstable debian), I cannot test my hypothesis but
it would be nice to know, since it would point out a bug in the
communication between hal and kernel... (in the long run this might be of
no importance since udev is going to be more important than hal, but never
mind).

Cheers,

Thomas
