[plug] Free computers for people in need

I just emailed a guy who I used to work with at a Bentley based mining company head-office. They are usually trying to offload ex lease (3 year old) hp dc7100 pc's...P4, 2.8ghz, 512 mb ram, 40gb hdd, dvd-rom etc. Perfect little Ubuntu box for a beginner.

I asked him to contact the OP off-list if he could help out.

As for disposal of old gear, Direct Recycling in Balcata (aka City of Stirling transfer station) will take any PC gear including CRT monitors free of charge. Just drive through the gate, head around to bay 6, back your vehicle up and ditch it.

They crush it up and recycle what they can (eg, make lots of $$$) from the gold, copper, nickel etc that is present in most consumer electronics, especially mainboards & add-on cards.

Hope that helps!

Cheers
Blake Munro

G'day John,

You could try Computer Angels (http://www.computerangels.org.au/), or
there is a group at Mudrock Uni which does exactly that. Their name is
"8Ball" (http://www.guild.murdoch.edu.au/services/8ball/).
