[plug] A warning ..... a DIRE warning ...

Hi all,

I've been bitten in the bum by a certain distro that shall remain
nameless, but comes from Utah.

I suppose it was my fault actually, but anyway on Thursday morning I
wandered through to start work and there was a flashy thing saying that
I had updates to install.

Had a look and was told that this was the LAST security update since my
distro was now officially OOOOOOOLD and out of support, and here was the
farewell security update. "Fair enough" thinks I - " a nice gesture from
Novell".

Click on the update, and it pops a window to say that I really should
consider upgrading, so i click on that and then it proceeds to slowly
make my machine totally unhackable .... as I watch, icons revert to
standard KDE gears, and clicking on them says they aren't actually
connected to anything ....

Byt the time I stopped I had no email program, Firefox was gone, and a
host of other things .... Only chance was to reinstall.

That took all day, since I had to download to my laptop and burn a DVD
from there .... THEN VMWare Server won't install, since it appears that
the Linux kernel no longer has a version.h file in the headers (checked
on 2 different distros), so loud shouts of "Goodness me, I wish things
would stay more like they used to be!!!".

Anyway I bunged in VirtualBox and after installing the guest stuff, I
quite like it. Couldn't use my VMWare disks of course, so have to
rebuild W2K as well ........

So be careful where you click and read the intent as well - I do admit
it was very early for me - before 7 am, but ......
