Thanks Ari, close to what I ended up with as the best solution. Go to 'Tools' 
'AutoCorrect Options', select the 'Options' tab and untick the 'URL 
Recognition' box. I know it will affect URL recognition in writer as well, but 
that's fine with me as I didn't like it there either!

For information, I got the answer from

it's written for OO 1.1, but the descriptions of the options is one of the 
clearest I have seen.
