I have a separate encrypted /home partition and several 8 gig
partitions for installing distros on. At any given time I have the
current Ubuntu, the previous version of it, and the latest Mint.

There is no problem with the /home partition in spite of the encryption.

But it will not keep any of your added programs, you will end up with
the default installation in all cases. If you have installed many
additional programs you might want to install aptoncd, it's in the
Ubuntu repositories and so most likely available in Mint too. That
makes a copy of what you have installed and it is supposed to put it
all back afterward.
