xdm/kdm usually runs as a daemon started from the init process and
restart ths xlogin whenever the user logs out from a session.

startx is a script that starts an X session for an already authenticated
user... As an aside I recently found out you can run more than one
xsession under the standard linux configurations...

Use startx -- :1 vt8
this starts a new xsession on virtual terminal 8 running as display :1
to switch between them use Ctrl-Alt-F8 and Ctrl-Alt-F7...
