windows partition I'm wondering if the mandrake installation didn't do
this to some extent.  However, the windows partition mounts fine now.

I suspect you're right to an extent, but I'm not sure, as RH is now
booting properly again and windows is mountable again.  Perhaps
playing with starting up fips with a boot disk somehow helped matters?
Could fips have auto-corrected the wrong number sin the partition
table?

Yes to both of the above questions.  Now that I've reactivated RH lilo
I need to properly set it up to boot mandrake...any tips on how not to
bollocks it up like I did with setting up mandrake's lilo?  :-)
