I know there are lot of other solutions to map names to IP addresses using MAC address maps on the DHCP server, however those are not suitable for this environment. I really need a solution for the clients to update the DNS record themselves.

Perhaps dynamic DNS? I've recently implemented this on my new
Mythbuntu box, with the aid of these three URLs:
http://www.debian-administration.org/articles/343
http://www.cameratim.com/computing/linux/using-bind-as-a-local-dns-server
http://oob.freeshell.org/nzwireless/dns.html

For bonus points, I implemented dynamic DNS externally too, since I'm
not on a fixed IP. Sooo nice being able to connect home without having
to remember an IP address that can change!

HTH,
Greg.
