[plug] Getting a Vodaphone Huawei dongle working

Wow, what can I say?
After reading the link you sent and ensuring I had the packages you
suggested (I had). I found a reference to a script called +ACI-sakis3g+ACI at
http://linuxconfig.org/mobile-broadband-connection-and-sakis3g and I am
now online - that script is FANTASTIC. Yep, I realise I may be overdoing
the priase, but I want to have its babies.....
I was initially disappointed since the Network Mangler icon hadn't
twitched, but I can ping, I can access the Al Gore's invention - the
interwebs ....
If you're stuck, give it a try - almost as worthwhile as using Disk
Doctor in the MS-DOS days to reverse the direction of rotation of your
disk drive to decrease seek time by 2 ms - well worth doing in the words
of Jerry Pournelle (and for those who never read the Chaos Manor column
in Byte magazine - he wasn't quite that bad - but nearly).
Thanks Bob for giving me the pointer.

+AD4 Hi Richard,

+AD4 The first thing I would do is put the broadband sim in the phone and
+AD4 check the connection is working with the settings you found.
+AD4
+AD4 Secondly, I think that dongle is one of the annoying Huawei ones that
+AD4 appear as a cdrom device when you first plug them in, so that you can
+AD4 install the connection software. You'll need to install usb-modeswitch
+AD4 +AFs-1+AF0, and usb-modeswitch-data - both of which should have ubuntu packages.
+AD4 In my experience you shouldn't be able to see the scsi cdrom when it's in
+AD4 the right mode.
+AD4
+AD4 If you're sure you've got it in the right mode and your settings are
+AD4 correct, but network mangler still isn't doing the right thing - disable
+AD4 network mangler and give wvdial a go. I've used wvdial with a Huawei E122
+AD4 with great success, but the wvdial config file needed a fair bit of
+AD4 tweaking to get it up to a reasonable speed.

+AD4 +AD4
+AD4 +AD4 Apologies for posting from a +ACI-non-plug-aware+ACI email address, but I'm in
+AD4 +AD4 sunny Canberra, and Westnet won't accept mail from me to send on for
+AD4 +AD4 some unfathomable reason - don't they know I'm trustworthy?
+AD4 +AD4
+AD4 +AD4 Anyway - since I'm in Canberra, I want to send an email or 3 or 187, and
+AD4 +AD4 I have a fear that data on my Android phone may cost quite a bit. (I'm
+AD4 +AD4 using it tethered to send this).
+AD4 +AD4
+AD4 +AD4 So, I went and splashed out on a Huawei K3771 dongle, thinking
+AD4 +AD4 everything would be easy. Alas, it isn't.
+AD4 +AD4
+AD4 +AD4 I did a bit of searching on the Google and found plenty of people with
+AD4 +AD4 similar problems to me, but most of them are outside Oz, or have much
+AD4 +AD4 older models or haven't had any answers.
+AD4 +AD4
+AD4 +AD4 What's happening with me, is that I can see the dongle in the network
+AD4 +AD4 manager, and also in dmesg and lsusb, which I will append - but I cannot
+AD4 +AD4 make a connection (I think it's authorization somehow, but ....)
+AD4 +AD4
+AD4 +AD4 It says it wants to attach and opens the connection window with all the settings below, but never actually connects.
+AD4 +AD4
+AD4 +AD4 Settings are
+AD4 +AD4 Number to dial is +ACo-99+ACM
+AD4 +AD4 Username is pp.internet, which I gleaned from one of those Googled
+AD4 +AD4 things
+AD4 +AD4 APN - live.vodafone.com
+AD4 +AD4 and password vodafone - all of which I gathered from the magic of
+AD4 +AD4 Google.
