On February 20th, 1962 John Glenn made three orbits around the earth.
During that flight John saw the lights of the City of Perth from his
Friendship 7 space craft. Trackers at Muchea made the first Australian
radio contact into space and thus began Australia's continuing involvement
in space.

On Monday February 20th from 5pm at the Northbridge Piazza on the corner of
James and Lake Streets in Northbridge, a live contact with the
International Space Station will mark the 50th Anniversary of that day.
We'll have a message from John Glenn, the Chief Scientist, the Mayor,
trackers from Muchea and Carnarvon, radio and optical telescopes, Amateur
Radio, a movie or two afterwards and a roof-top Astro-fest on the roof of
the Roe Street Car Park across the road.

Thanks to the WA State Records Office, the WA Museum, the City of Perth,
the Hills Amateur Radio Group, ARISS and NASA, 10 students from around the
state will ask a question from an astronaut in space and you can be there
to watch.

Details:

   - Monday, 20th February 2012, from 5pm
