I did use one a few years ago, but things change so not even sure
which one it was now.

Something like http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/role-scoper/ sounds
like it'll do what you want.
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/user-access-manager/ and
http://www.im-web-gefunden.de/wordpress-plugins/role-manager/ also
sound like they'll do what you want. Best thing is to try each and
find which you find easiest and does what you want. I've been through
many plugins before until I find the right one for me.
