[plug] What programming languages are popular in Perth?

Nice to see CUDA mentioned. I personally think that these parallel architectures are the ones of tomorrow, not 5 years from now. It seems that they will creep up more and more in the data centers. Development for these is a challenge, it has been for 30 years. NVIDIA has a free SDK if I recall correctly and a PC card with a GPU can be found quite easily now. Some Macs have them as a video graphics card. Unfortunately Sony has closed the door on developing on the PS3 and the market is more around NVIDIA and the new GPUs.
iVEC offers free parallel programming short courses from time to time, but it doesn't seem easy to get in. I tried when I was working for a uni in Perth and didn't even get an answer. Get on their mailing list to stay informed.
There was a GPU interest group in Perth but it's not active anymore.
Cheers,
Fred

1. Javascript, PHP, Protium (in-house language), VB6 (yes, it's still out there), Perl, SQL, and a few others as the need arises (C, Delphi, Ada, Assembler, Fortran)

2. Never having specialised in anything, it comes down more to what I'd "like" rather than what I prefer.

2.1 I'd like to do some COBOL. I haven't done anything with that since 1983 and now, with OpenCOBOL, there's a powerful compiler that doesn't cost two arms and a leg to own.
2.2 I'd like to develop some mobile device programming skills

2.3 I'd like to learn NVIDIA's CUDA -- the Dr Dobbs article at <http://ubm.io/LSYIzh> sounds very interesting

Hi PLUG!

I have two questions for the developers among us:

1. What programming language do you rely on to pay the bills?

2. What programming language would you prefer to use, if different

from the above?

Cheers!
