Hi Jon,
I think raspberry pi or odroid will do the job. The more expensive option is NUC if you want something more beefy which I don't think you'll need anyway.
Maybe can also check your friend's office to see if there is any old laptop being phased out. I got a broken screen laptop from work and repurposed it as my home server. Although running cost wise, SBC like pi or odroid will be cheaper.
Interested to hear other's opinions too.
