Just a hunch, but check you haven't got mgetty running, and if you do,
make sure they both open the same device (ie you can't have one running on
/dev/ttyS1 and the other on /dev/modem with /dev/modem a symlink to
/dev/ttyS1) and that you are calling pppd with the "lock" option.
