Throughput maybe not, but _much_ lower latency. It makes an enormous
difference if you're actually using the link interactively.

Try /usr/sbin/traceroute to see what the machine just the other end of
the link is.

Install and try "bing" - the "bandwidth ping" - to test the link from
localhost to the far end.
