Actually, the foreign HOWTOs, particularly (surprise! :-) the French
ones, chew up a lot of space and can generally be safely removed.

To put your machine to sleep if it is not busy.
As root, type this...
rm /etc/rc*.d/[SK][0-9]*apmd
..to make the worrisome message disappear.
