Further to Dave's suggestions, if you setup a new share of /home (or
wherever your home directories are), you will most likely have to
include "force user = root" in the share definition which will ensure
that Samba accesses the share with root privileges.  If your home
directories have read access to another group such as "users" then you
will be able to get by with "force group = users" which is better from
a security standpoint, but I notice that recent distributions are
moving away from that kind of open philosophy (sigh).
