Bob,
OK, so it failed trying to create /tmp/.X11-unix . errno=17 means "File
exists", so why was it trying to create it? Can you show us the result
of "ls -la /tmp/.X11-unix" please.

This is connected. Local X clients connect to the server by a 'socket' in
the above directory. e.g. /tmp/.X11-unix/X0

- what does /tmp/.X11-unix look like, if it exists?
- otherwise, what are the permissions on /tmp ?
- Check the X server is running as root. You should have suid on Xwrapper,
ie -rws--x--x   1 root  6116 Apr 19 07:33  /usr/X11R6/bin/Xwrapper*
