So you rebuilt the kernel yourself and this started to happen? It could be
the following:
	* make modules did not complete => failed.
	* uselss lines in /etc/modules

debian does depmod -a automatically upon boot. I think I modified my boot
scripts so it doesn't run depmod -a if modules.dep exists but that would
cause problems if I decide to recompile the same version of the kernel,
which is unlikely. Recently I forgot to compile in sound support so I
decide to compile as a module and had it installed without rebootingthe
new kernel. I had to remember to depmod -a which isn't much to ask, if you
know what is going on (recreating list of modules).

It's qutie hard to diagnose the problem and solve it without crucial
information. Often, people forget what they do to their machine and find
out their machine is broken. It has happened to me -- a problem lived for
1-2months until some guy assisted me locating it and then I went *BINGO*,
solved, heh.
