1 It is invalid to mail to an alias: what your administrator SHOULD do is
put an A record (not a cname) for atmos.
2 It is entirely likely that the murdoch.edu.au sendmail (or equivalent)
has been configured to rewrite email addresses as you surmise. Mine at
home does because ypou folk can't write to me at emu.os2.ami.com.au which
is where my mail goes.

I'm a bit surprised the list doesn't unsubscribe addresses that bounce.
