Guys (and Girls)

Does anyone have any idea how to remap the backspace key for X 
without using xmodmap. Trevor (Murdoch uni's webmaster) is trying to 
setup a lab of Linux boxes as X-terminals. I have spoken to him on 
the phone and he has gone off looking in XF86Config to see if there 
is something that can be done at the basic X config level.
